What is an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon?
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (frequently referred to as oral surgeons), specialize in surgical treatments that address functional and esthetic aspects of the mouth, gums, teeth and jaws. Examples of treatment provided by oral surgeons are: wisdom tooth removal, surgical root canals, oral implants, cosmetic skin resurfacing, oral cancer treatment, etc. In terms of training, oral surgeons are graduates of accredited dental schools and in addition, they complete a residency (generally four years) at a university hospital that has an accredited oral and maxillofacial program.
